Dark Hollow Farm hitting exactas!
Twice in one week runners bred, born and raised at Dark Hollow Farm hit the exacta at Laurel Park! The fourth race on Aug. 20 for 2-year-olds saw the debut of the most expensive yearling colt sold at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling sale, a Dark Hollow Farm-bred son of Bodemeister purchased by Peter G. Angelos for $190,000. The striking bay now named O Dionysus, who bears a strong likeness to his sire, went off as favorite in the field of 11 and made it extra exciting for his backers. Warming up on the way to the gate, O Dionysus ran off with his rider for nearly furlong. When the race finally went off, he broke a bit slow and was lengths behind the early leader, Dark Hollow Farm-bred Popizar. Fly Rises to Challenge
Class shown through in Fly’s 2-year-old debut. Trained by Phil Schoenthal for partners David and JoAnn Hayden’s Dark Hollow Farm, Arnold and Susie Davidov, Cal MacWilliam, Neil Teitelbaum, Rick Wallace and Kingdom Bloodstock, the filly faced nine others in the five and a half-furlong maiden special weight over the Laurel turf course on Aug. 5. She broke well from her inside post, held her position along the rail, just behind odds-on choice and early leader Consulting, made a move to the outside rounding the turn and battled to the finish. Stride for stride the two fillies ran as they reached for the wire, in the end Fly proving stronger as she pulled away to win by a half length. The first winner for her freshman sire, the recently deceased Brilliant Speed, Fly is out of Storm Cat’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint-G1 champion Desert Stormer. Bodemeister Colt Latest Sales Star!
For the third year in a row a yearling from the Dark Hollow Farm consignment was one of the top prices at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale, this year held Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Timonium. A handsome bay colt, the spitting image of his sire Bodemeister out of Safe Journey, representing three generations of stars bred by Dark Hollow Farm, was this year’s top-priced colt, selling for $190,000 to Peter G. Angelos. He is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Joy, winner this summer of Laurel’s All Brandy Stakes, and current stakes-placed 3-year-old Combat Diver, the first two foals to race out of their dam. The family has been a stakes treasure trove, descending from Dark Hollow Farm foundation mare Safely Home, the colt’s third dam. Safe Journey, a daughter of Flatter, is one of nine winners for stakes-placed Safe At the Plate, who also produced graded stakes performers Kettle Won and Cognac Kisses. Safe Journey’s half-sister Kettle’s Sister is the dam of graded stakes winner Vinceremos. Baffert Signs Dream Ticket for $410,000 at Keeneland
Hall of Fame and Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert, who with his team of advisors has found countless gems at yearling sales around the country, found a dream at Keeneland in Kentucky the week of Sept. 14. Baffert signed the ticket for $410,000 for the Maryland-bred yearling colt by Ghostzapper out of the Malibu Moon mare DREAM on behalf of Three Amigos Stable, a partnership of Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman. Bred by longtime partners Dark Hollow Farm, Dorsey Brown, Mr. and Mrs. David Schwaber and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Davidov, DREAM’s colt is the second produced from the graded stakes-placed mare also bred by the partners. The appropriately named DREAM has always been a dream – an exciting juvenile winner in her only start at 2, she was a bonafide stakes performer when hitting the board in three consecutive stakes starts at 3, including Aqueduct’s Gr. 3 Cicada, before retiring to the Dark Hollow Farm broodmare band. Renowned bloodstock agent Donato Lanni was impressed with the talented mare and tried to buy her after that maiden win at Delaware Park. An advisor on the Baffert team, Lanni spotted her Ghostzapper son and made the call. DREAM’s first foal is 2015 juvenile winner SPLIT, a son of Speightstown who was a six-figure yearling at Keeneland a year ago. Her two yearlings have totalled $530,000 at auction. Out of DREAM OUT LOUD, a half-sister to English champion and U.S. Grade 1 winner Magistretti and also a member of the Dark Hollow Farm broodmare band, DREAM has a 2015 filly by Blame and was bred to More Than Ready for 2016. JOY and excitement in Laurel’s All Brandy Stakes!
A stakes winner at 3 and 4, JOY was determined to get another at 5 as she battled through the stretch to take the All Brandy S. on Maryland Pride Day at Laurel Park on Saturday, Aug. 22. The daughter of Pure Prize, descending from Dark Hollow’s legendary foundation mare SAFELY HOME, got the decision by a head for her first win of the year, and first since scoring in Belmont Park’s Perfect Sting S. last summer. Racing exclusively in stakes company since the Perfect Sting S., JOY finished third in last year’s All Brandy S. and earlier this summer was third in Delaware Park’s Justakiss S. Trained by Graham Motion, she went off as the 11-10 favorite in the All Brandy’s field of nine Maryland-bred and/or Maryland-sired fillies and mares, was settled off the pace by Julian Pimentel, then made a sweeping move around the far turn, hit the front in midstretch and dueled with stakes winner Vielsalm to the wire in the mile and an eighth turf test. In recording her fifth win, JOY upped her earnings to $248,544. She is one of two stakes performers for her dam SAFE JOURNEY (by Flatter), who is out of Hall of Famer SAFELY KEPT’s stakes-placed half-sister Safe At the Plate. SAFE JOURNEY has also produced 2015 stakes-placed 3-year-old Combat Diver. |
